Arin,

I am a developer, currently focused almost exclusively on the iPad.

I can tell you, from my personal perspective, not only is David Lynch a dinosaur, he is DEAD WRONG.

Mobile devices and mobile mediums are the future. Kids are adopting these devices at breakneck pace, and the fantastic thing about the Apple platform is they have the distribution built in for you! They have the penetration, the market, and all they do is take 30%. The rest is entirely up to you.

You are right that 90 minutes is not suitable for a phone -- but it IS for an iPad. I can tell you as an iPad owner that it's basically a complete TV replacement.

I see devices like this not only changing movies, but changing books. What do books look like on a device with the ability to touch and manipulate things? What do movies look like on a device you can touch and interact with?

You are dead on here. This is the future and everyone who embraces it will get to write the history.

Not only can they, but I've been telling indie filmmakers they must embrace mobile. Not only for "enhancing the experience" etc, Any of the things you mention are good.

But I also think Indie filmmakers need to be looking at producing content specifically geared to mobile platforms. This might take the shape of series with short episodes, for one example. But to a degree, I think a lot of indie filmmakers are looking backward and really not seeing the opportunity in actually telling their stories in formats suitable for these devices. Not trying to watch their existing films on them (Lynch is absolutely right about this, a 90 minute film is not suited to a phone). But I love watching things for 5-7 min at a time. I've been keeping up on some good web series that have episodes of this length. And I'm starting to look at how I can re-shape my stories to suit the platform.

I think this is an extremely important market and will only get more so.
